EP Release + IPP Presentations + Hot 103!

In the words of Jessica, HOLY CRAPPERS! These last few weeks have been a friggin' whirlwind of epic proportions. First off, our EP release happened on February 27 at the Academy Food Drinks Music and it was an amazingly amazing night. 200 people showed up despite not putting the date OR place of the release on the show posters (oopsies). Word of mouth and social media did the trick, however. Thank you SO MUCH to everyone who came out. Seeing your beautiful smiling faces and your waving arms in the audience is a scene I will never forget as long as I live. You made two little girls who have dreamed of playing a gig their entire lives very, very, very happy.

We were so damn nervous in the hours leading up to the show, but it was worth the anxiety. We felt like total rockstars that Saturday. Why? Let me count the ways:

We got our hurr did - both Mohawks,

We had supa cool outfits,

Kerilee did our make-up all professional-like,

There was a LINE UP to get into the Academy,

The venue was sold out...and it was our first show! (Well, there was birthday party there too but still...)

We came onstage to the roar of the crowd chanting "disco! disco! disco! disco!"

We had robot dancers wearing half-sweaters that said DISCO! across the front, body paint and silky boxer shorts (thx Ostry and Jonny!)

We had underwear thrown at us (aww yeah!)

There was actual PEOPLE there to see us! And they danced! And they sang!

People had bought the music that we had created. Like, they actually used their hard-earned money to purchase our music! So they could listen to it. In the shower. In their car. On their iPod when they were on the bus. Surreal.

Steve Vogelsang bought us shots,

People asked us for autographs (WTF???)

Profesh DJs RPG and Dan L played our show,

Our parents were proud,

We were proud,

We drank,

We went to not one, but TWO after parties,

Ostry gave me a fuzzy purple vest,

Got home at 7:30 in the morning.

We have so much video footage and pictures from that night - check back at a later date for more.

But our disco! work did not end after the EP release. No, no, no. As most of you know, but some of you don't, disco! disco! was born as a school project. Both Jessica and I are in the Creative Communications program at Red River College and we got the amazing opportunity to do a year-long creative project in order to graduate. It's kind of like a thesis but way more fun, obviously. What we did is called an Independent Professional Project, but it was neither independent or very professional (rockstars don't have to follow the rules).

Anyway, we proposed to release an EP and market it through via an EP release show, which we did. The final step was presenting our project at the Independent Professional Project Presentations at the Park Theatre. We presented last Thursday. It was funny - we got the host, our friend Amanda, to get the crowd chanting "disco! disco!" while we walked from the top of the theatre to the stage to perform "Rockstar Zombie." However, mine and Jessica's cue to start walking was when the video art started, and that got delayed so by the time we started walking down the aisle, no one was chanting anymore. It was silent. So I used my obnoxiousness to yell at everyone to whoop it up. We got right into Rockstar Zombie and it almost comfortable to perform - not nearly as terrifying as the first time. Only minor glitch was that my guitar wasn't heard through the PA. I probably would have sounded like shit anyway.

Then we speeched it up, detailing what we did to create disco! disco!, how we did it, advice we'd give new CreComms about doing an IPP and our thank yous. We also showed a video montage of our EP release that Jessica expertly edited together like the fackin' pro media production student she is. We'll post it later.I knew Thursday was going to be a great day from the get-go. Upon driving to the Park, I heard OUR SONG BEING PLAYED ON HOT 103. Like, what the fack. Two girls, who eight months ago didn't know how to write a song and barely knew how to play instruments, had Ace Burpee playing their song on the morning show. What. The. Fack. I'm not gonna lie, I teared up. Ace played a clip of the song and talked about us for a bit. Again, surreal. Thank you again, Jer, for hooking up that media hit and running the disc down to the station, literally, the moment you found out they were interested. You rock.

So we get played on Hot 103 and officially complete our IPP - a years worth of work. disco! disco! is no longer a college project - it's our band. Thursday was such an overwhelming day, but a good kind of overwhelming. I'll never forget it.

Mini update in disco land

Item of note #1) Jess and I did our first ever media interview today! Check out the next issue of The Projector for Shayna Wiwierski's article. It comes out Monday, February 22 I believe. I've been lobbying Matt, the editor-in-chief, to put us on the cover. Only time will tell if my incessant nagging will pay off. It friggin' better.

Item of note #2) Popular party DJ Dan L is going to open our EP release! This means, you will want to get our asses there early and start dancing.

Item of note #3) We have pretty much decided on our EP's cover art! It's bright and funky, just as disco! disco! implies.

Item of note #4) The preliminary mix of our EP is done like dinner! Going to hear it for the first time tomorrow and I am incredibly excited X 6,908,78h,hg7 heh heh.

Item of note #5) We are searching for bright, beautiful people to work the door / sell CDs at our release on Feb. 27. If you'd like to help us out you would be rewarded with no cover charge and a bunch of high fives and perhaps even hugs. Comment if you're interested, poopsies.

Also, we are still batting around ideas of what to call our EP. We need to nail it down by Saturday, so if you have any ideas COMMENT, YO!

The day that Kelly and I have been waiting for ever since we decided to become a band is almost here!! Our EP is almost done!! It's nearing the end of the mixing stage, then it will be sent to John Paul Peters to master it. Once he's done with it, it will be ready to show the world...

WE... ARE... SO... STOKED!!!!!

Jer has been mixing it for us, even though he's super busy in first-year Cre-Comm. We want to say that JER IS THE COOLEST DUDE in the world. He's changing our songs from awesome to TOTALLY AWESOME!

Kelly and I have been mocking up some covers for the EP and trying to decide on a title, no winners yet. But that's also super exciting. I can't believe it's already February!

Jersey Shore vs. disco! disco!

It will be a test of talent and determination Saturday, February 27, when disco! disco! and power-couple Ronnie and Sammi of critically acclaimed reality MTV show Jersey Shore go head-to-head on who can get more partiers at their event. We, of course, will be throwing a rager on Feb. 27, while Ron-ammi are making a guest appearance at the Republic Nightclub.

Jess and I vow to work hard to bring YOU a party to remember, one FAR better than Ronnie and Sammi can bring to the table. I recognize how tempting it will be to resist the "beat beating" and grotesque public make-outs between the two superstars that may take place at the Republic on Feb. 27, but all I can give you is my word.

Video artists, take a peek

Jess has been interning at Video Pool over the past three weeks. In a sentence, it's an organization that helps video artists make and distribute short films and video art.

Over Jessica's three week stint, she (obviously) spent a lot of time talking to video artists and the consensus around the office was that this video was the coolest of the awesome. We agree. The song is pretty damn catchy too. And the band's name...pretty outrageous.

Not entirely off-topic: Video Pool teamed up with the Winnipeg Film Group to throw a party for art's birthday (not a person, the concept) last Saturday in the Art Space building. It was "retro-future" themed, so attendees were encouraged to dress how people in the past thought the future would look like. I went for a black, shiny svelt look but ended up looking more like Lara Croft, Tomb Raider. When I showed up, I couldn't find Jess anywhere amongst the kids with metal bowls and light bulbs on their heads, tin-foil everythings, and drag queens. I did however spot from afar, a crazy girl with a pink wig, pink ski goggles and silver tinsle drapped over her shoulders. On closer inspection, twas band mate Jess! I wish I took pictures. The whole night was pretty wild.

Mexication

Weirdest thing: Jess and I went on family vacations on the same week, almost to the same place. We didn't plan it that way, it just happened, which was good cause it meant that we had two weeks to work on our EP over the holiday break. Had we gone on seperate weeks, we would have only had one. Magic. AND she was on a resort in Playa del Carmen and I was in the Rivera Maya, which are only 22 miles away from eachother. Crazy.

Jess lived in Mexico, collectively for a year (she moved once, came home and moved back again). So she got to meet up with some old homies.

I, on the other hand, had never been to Mexico so all experiences were new. I had never even been in the ocean before! Or seen a palm tree that wasn't on TV! Now I love Mexico and want to live there forever and ever.

We were so inspired by the lovely Mexico, we wrote her into one of our songs.

WE ARE BACK (sorry it's been so long)

Oy vey, we are sorry we have not been blogging. WE WERE ABDUCTED BY ALIENS. We're back now and have a lot to talk about.

First: There's not much to do in space, so we had a lot of time to put our ideas together and write our EP. We're almost finished recording! Since we've been back, we have been polishing up our vocal parts at Jessica's place.

Second: We had our first photo shoot! It was about 45 mins of prep time to get our faces and hair beautified for a 10 minute photoshoot. Between Jessica and I, we hauled about 6 tons of clothes to Jim's studio but ended up using only one outfit each. I'll post pics later when I convert the raw images to .jpegs. Perhaps I will make them into a slideshow... Anyway, Kerilee Raven was our photographer as well as our make-up artist. We love Kerilee.

Third: We've been planning our show.

Fourth: We flipped our lame tumblr blog to THIS ONE. This is our new and sparkly official disco! disco! blog. I promise to update all the time. blogger4lyfe.

So Jess and I were going to go to the Zoo last Thursday to do some “research.” I mean it! Really, we were. This electro-pop band called Steed Lord from Iceland was playing. Our intentions were to go down and sit in the back row all proper-like, hands folded around our glasses of ice water and observe. Never were we going to sneak in a mickey o’ gin and rip up the dance floor. We were entertaining no-such ridiculous fantasies.

But seriously, we were going to the show to see how they set up to play a live show and perhaps pick their brains post-show for some advice. However, they cancelled the show the morning of due to a “heath emergency.” Well, whatta time to get sick damnit! Oh, how you have inconvenienced disco! disco!, Steed Lord.
